On the Campaign Trail

REPUBLIC

Ken's spell as Treasurer started with him picking up all the bills, as it was broke. However, a begging letter in the February Newsletter brought some money in & the Queen Gran's death plus the ghastly Jubilee brought many new members, with contributions. The Queen's perjury in the Burrell Case & Prince Charles' apparent illegal activity helped as well. On January 23rd, we threw a dinner for parliamentarians in the House of Lords (yeh, yeh...I know), hosted by Jack Dormand, which raised interest & new members. At the AGM, Ken traded Treasurer for the busier but more congenial job of Webmaster. (Link to the web site). This is clearly, the best use of our spare (!) time. The AGM was a huge success, filling the Hogg Lecture Theatre at Westminster University.

Ken's President campaign (on this link) had a leg-up from an article in 'Green Socialist' with a photo & a sympathetic editorial. Thank you, Susan Murray.

CHARTER 88

An apparently quiet year with a change of Director. There was a successful conference we had to miss & the usual pragmatic responses to the government's unacceptable identity card proposals. We have Robin Cook on-side with parliamentary reform & will take part in the regional government discussions, probably with a conference on the subject.

LOCAL ELECTIONS

Labour was thumped in the May Elections in Islington & does not yet know what hit it. Ken does not make himself popular for pointing out that putting academics, lawyers & local authority workers, none of whom have real administrative experience, is not the way to run a multi-million pound corporation successfully. Not that the ruling Liberals are much better, shutting down all the fun & artistic activities & now, gradually shedding members. This is not surprising in a rag-bag party stretching from Greens to neo-Fascists. Avis rightly claims the credit for inducing one to resign. At least, we can still throw good parties, see the photos.

THE STUART LOW TRUST

Ken gave this mental health support group his Cross-Swiss Walk talk & they went on a trip to France but we did not join them, as Richard, who has been rather more ill, did not want to go.
