Days Four & Five

We drove to the end of the runway in the new car, then back to Kanapitsa & down to the beach tavern for coffee & ice cream, which gave the Jones’ the view across the bay to the city. After a thorough laze, Ken drove the team in the nice, new vehicle to Agios Eleni, which is on the West end & had the Jones’ first proper beach taverna experience for lunch. They knew Geof (Tzef: everyone knows Geof). The girls had more omelettes & Martin & Ken had Greek Salads, huge.

We called at the supermarket for odds & ends for the big meal made in the later afternoon. It was a question of ‘store cupboard’ cookery, the store cupboard being filled with what we could get in the supermarket here. Martin & Ken swam in the pool. Then, we did laundry, using the washing machine in our bathroom. Meanwhile, Ken devised that we should fry the chicken with spices, make a sauce of onions, garlic & tomatoes & (risky idea this), boil potatoes, slice them & stack them with pepper & salt & reheat them in milk & Greek yogurt. This actually worked quite well but would be too expensive to do at home because Greek yogurt is cheap here but not there. We served this to Geof & Lisa outside The Barn. We had bought wine, ordinary white & retsina, about which Geof was rude. Ken said the Jones’ had to have the full Greek experience. Although dinner went on for over two hours, we managed to wash up after.

Day Five.

Martin & Ken walked to the road with the rubbish. Since one puts used bog roll in a bin, these & the kitchen rubbish have to be taken to a Council (Demos) skip on the road. Then, Ken drove up to the Kastro road but it ends too far from the Old Town for the girls to walk down (& up again). So, we went to Platanos for coffee, then down to Skiathos City, parking in the East car park & walking round to the Paralya, where the Jones’ & Ken went round the Boutzoi. Then, we had lunch again in Kabourelias.

The next farm down from Geof's.

West from the end of the good Kastro Road.

We researched the tour boats but it is really too soon in the season. We parked the girls in the café on the ferry port & collected the car, dropping in to the supermarket (much better) East of the town for decent bread & booze for tonight. The wind had been picking up while we ate & Ken took them to Aselinos, where the waves were huge & the girls stayed in the car, as Avis’ wig was in danger. On the way back, we were stopped by a huge herd of goats, all in very good shape. Lida was to say it was the last herd on the island. The sunshade had blown into the pool, to be rescued by Martin. It was soon too cold the read outside, so we came in. Lida made us couscous with a sauce including lamb & a pickle made by a friend. This was excellent.
