Leaving Reykjavik after a day's touring

Beautiful day. We had booked on an all-day tour of important geological sites, called "The Golden Circle" & it was just as well, as the ship berthed miles from the middle of Reykjavik. It was a long drive before we got to...

Almannagjá - the Fissure between the North American & Eurasian Plates

At this remarkable place, the bus dropped us at the top, which allowed us to actually walk down the fissure between the plates, which shift apart by 2cm per annum, a tremendous rate of progress in geological time. The plates are quite close at the top, where we got the two views below & the narrow fissure shown. A little further, they are sufficiently separated for easy progress. Further down, there is a view across the valley & a waterfall where they Vikings drowned naughty women. This is in two parts, upper & lower. We picked up our coach at the bottom.

Across the lake from...

...the top of the fissure

Down the fissure

Across the valley

Well in the fissure

At the end of the narrow bit

The old volcano went off pre-human

Lots of these two flowers

Looking up the end

The upper falls for drowning women

The lower falls

It was quite a drive from the fissure to the Geyser then, we had lunch. We had seen Hekla, the volcano which goes off every few years but was covered in snow. However, taking photos through the coach window is not usually successful because of dirty windows & reflexions.

The geyser

...or Geysir in the local spelling, as this was the first one named. Ken spent some time looking at the wrong geyser but finally found the right one!

The wrong geyser

The right one goes off...

...and subsides

Off again...

...and subsides again

Stinking fumarole

The biggest glacier in Europe

It was much further on to the promised waterfall. To the North, was this glacier, which the guide said was the biggest in Europe. Ken thought the Aletsch Gletscher was the biggest & this one looks stagnant but it is hard tell at this distance but the guide said it was shrinking, so maybe it is.

Looking South

...but the glacier is to the North

It goes behind these jagged hills

Gullfoss - the greatest waterfalls in Europe?

The guide listed this with the great waterfalls of the World & it did not disappoint. Two falls close together & a long, narrow, so fast moving, gorge ahead of them. The layout of paths & ladders was very good.

The river coming in

The falls

Rainbow when the Sun comes out

The lower falls & gorge

Up close & furious

Then, a long & rather tedious drive back to Reykjavik, with a 'comfort' stop, where Avis had a cake. Reykjavik has developed since our last visit in 2012 on this link.
