Tuesday 7th April 2015
Lisbon & into the Alcântara Dock, alas but in the berth near the Praça do Commerce, a “troop ship” was moored. There was a free shuttle bus to the bottom of the Avenida, which took agesto wriggle through the lethal Portuguese traffic.

| 1st World War Memorial | Marques Pombal | Foot of the Pombal statue |
We walked up the Avenida, a long-seeming way uphill to the Marques Pombal Statue, then through the Edward VII Park & stopped for a coffee as soon as we could (€2.40).

Then, we found the Guggenheim Museum, which had local art (& Paula Rego is local here), Arshile Gorky & Bernard Frize, a poser. (€5 for both).
| Next to the Guggenheim | Guggenheim | Back of the Guggenheim |

| Inside the Guggenheim | Henry VIII (don't ask) | We took the tube (€3.60) to the shuttle muster point & arrived back at the ship in time for some lunch. Then, the crew had a full emergency drill. We did not leave as planned that evening but only at 14:00 the next day. I gave the Shostakovich talk on Wednesday & balloted the class for an extra talk on Friday. They chose Sibelius. In between, I gave "King Arthur - fact, legend & music", on which I need to do more work! |
