Praia da Vitoria, Terceira

Thursday 2nd April 2015

The big Caldera & the viewpoint

Up at 7, as we were on a tour round Terceira at 9, all day, escorted by me. The guide Paula was very good but I did do an explanation of the difference between a caldera & a crater. We went up to the view point over the caldera first, then along the North Coast, where the road is well back from the cliffs to avoid wasting good agricultural land. We stopped at Biskitos to look a the lava- surrounded ‘natural’ swimming pools.

There is also a Wine Museum there, which served too much wine (whole glasses) of considerable strength.

Paula the Guide knew everything

Then, a long ride over the volcanos in the middle of the island & through several different zones of vegetation to Angra do Heroismo, where we had a brief look round & a stop for lunch, which was very slow coming: soup, pork, broccoli & rice; creme caramel.

We went up Monte Brasil & then, drove inland to the caves, which are (is) in fact, a volcano shaft, one of only four in the world where the magma retreated & one can walk down a spiral staircase but my new camera did not produce results, as I don’t know it yet. Otherwise, it performed ok. We drove back, once the road being blocked by goats & twice, blocked by cattle. I was very tired & had a bath. After listening to an all-classical concert by Alona & Natascha, the Andante Duo, we had dinner in the restaurant.
