Trip to Leipzig with the Anglo-German Family History Society |

Sunday 11th May 2003
Gerhard took us through refurbished suburbs he thought interesting & I didn't before we went on the motorway (old Hitler autobahn) to Weimar. This is a more scenic route than on the old road I used in 2000. Nice sunny day. I gave a lecture on Liszt on the way, pointing out that he was not just a showman but had serious musical objectives & that for him to take the job of kapellmeister in Weimar was exactly as if John Lennon had dcided to lecture at Lancaster University. I also told them how much help he gave to other musicians & his benefit concerts for flood victims & strikers, him being a Saint Simonian. Gerhard talked about Goethe. We fled the group, which Gerhard (Mr Workhard) gave a short tour to, and went straight to Goethe's Garden House, which we had missed the first time. I took an illegal photo of his desk. Then up the Ilm park , into the palace square & round the town. We had lunch on the Markt square. Some things have changed, all for the better. Ther pedestrian area is even bigger & more buildings have been repaired. Link to my other Weimar page from 2000. We had to leave for Naumburg at 2 & I asked if anyone knew a more charming & cultured place than Weimar. No takers.
