Port-of-Tyne for Newcastle

Tuesday 27th December

Down the River Tyne from Port-of-Tyne in the morning

Port-of-Tyne Marina & Tower

Up at 8 &, after breakfast, we had the complicated combination of a shuttle bus from Port-of-Tyne, where we were berthed, to Tynemouth, an attractive looking place but really, no time to explore, as we bought Metro tickets for the centre of Newcastle. We got out at the Grey Memorial (he who gave votes to the bourgeoisie & made the tea) & proceeded down Grey Street, which became steeper as we went. The architecture was impressive - the confidence of the Victorian shipbuilders. Avis is still not feeling well, so after looking across the river at the Sage, we tried to get hot chocolate from the Slug & Lettuce but (!) they had run out of milk.

The New Castle

The Baltic Flour Mill & the Sage at Gateshead

We walked up to the Central Station, passing the cathedral & actual New Castle on the way. There, we did get hot chocolate, then took the Metro back. The shuttle arrived to meet the train, bless him, as it meant we got some lunch, even though it was late.
