Day 1: Up the Simplon mule track (away from the modern road)
Day 2: The passes (either Usseri Nanzlichi or Bistinen) & the Gebidem Pass to Gspon

Day 3 this page: The Gspon Hoheweg to Saas Grund

Again, the weather was rotten when I did this both in 1981 & in 2008, so the photos are not great.

It is the same path for the first half. (After that, there are two options). It rises gently to Finilu, which has a new little church dated 2003.
I was shocked that such capital investment in superstition still goes on.

Crossing the Mattwaldbach

The path seemed to rise all day. There is a bit of going down soon after the Schwarzewald, where coffee can be obtained but it is a bit early for such indulgence, given that it is quite a long day if one goes to Kreuzboden, the upper alternative. At Siwineboden, the paths split. The one going down, I took in 1981 & gradually comes out at Saas Tamatten, just North of Saas Grund & a much easier way. I went to Kreuzboden in 2008.

Both hohewegs from the Saas Fee Mittaghorn

The Kreuzboden track goes higher & is even metalled for a short way before a tiny village, Grüebi. Then, up for a long way to an area of largish broken blocks that needed careful negotiation, especially in the mist, as the track is not obvious. Eventually, they petered out onto a good track down a little to the Kreuzboden ski area. I had a coffee Sfr3.70 & picked my way down the ski slope, never a very comfortable thing to do, to the Triftalp village, where one can resume the old Weissmies Hut track down the zig-zags to Saas Grund.

I stayed the night in Saas Grund (Hotel Tenne) but if you have any puff left, there are several options: bus or thumb a lift to Saas Fee; cross the bridge, turn right & follow the mule track up (mauletierweg, also used to get to the Balfrin Hoheweg from Saas Grund, which I did the next day, see this link for doing it the other way round) or cross the bridge, turn left & follow that track up to Saas Fee
