The Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg

From Grindelwald Grund, there is a gondelbahn up the Mannlichen, the ridge which separates Grindelwald from Wengen. If you need a lazy day, it is pleasant just to walk back down across the Itramen meadows to Grund. However, the better walk is along the ridge more or less to the SSE to Kleine Scheidegg past the Tschuggen. The trains go through Kleine Scheidegg & the station buffet does a great käseschnitte. There is a straight-forward path up the Lauberhorn to the West, which is worth doing. This is where the longest ski race of the World Cup circuit starts. There are two paths down from Kleine Scheidegg to Grund, one under the Eiger which goes through every station (so you can cop out on the train) & the other through Büstiglen which starts NE & goes into the woods. Longer, it is pleasanter on a really hot day.

First to the Schynigge Platte

There is a gondelbahn up from Gydisdorf (East end of the town) to First on the ridge north of the town. You can buy a combination ticket which takes you up & down the rack railway from the Schynigge Platte at the West end of the ridge & then have a very pleasant day with enormous views both North & South walking along it. There is a café on the Faulhorn, about 1/3 way along. The really hardy can take the bus to Grosse Scheidegg & walk the whole ridge but it is also pleasant to split the trip over two days, from Grosse Scheidegg to First & walk down as the first (sorry) part.
