Inadequate proposals for the 'New River' City Road Crossing |

If you think a road crossing is dangerous for pedestrians the Council thinks you should get rid of the pedestrians! The crossing from Colebrooke Row (very popular as the obvious way from St. Peter's Ward to Goswell Road & on to St. John's Street for Sadlers Wells, is laid out in such a way that pedestrians have to cross the cycle track several times & make a big diversion to operate the lights on Goswell Road. There are NO Pedestrian lights on City Road, so our smart Council (one-time Urban Regeneration boss = Bridget Fox, defeated at the last election) say, 'let's get rid of the pedestrians'. WE ARE ALL PEDESTRIANS AT SOME TIME! Good news! Thanks to the pressure on Council Officers from Avis Saltsman from 'Living Streets', Gillian Comins from the 'Angel Association' & Ken Baldry from CCC, temporary barriers were put in to stop rogue motorists from turning left into Colebrooke Row & subsequently, a proper island but some motorists still cut over into the wrong lane to get in. It pays to make a fuss! It was a pity that the previous elected councillors were never 'available' for these campaigns but they were thrown out in the last elections. |
The entrance to Colebrooke Row. It is proposed that the one-way cycle track is replaced by a two-way one, inviting cheating cars to sneak up the cycle track! |
Looking back to Colebrooke Row from the 'island' between City Road & (foreground) Goswell Road |
Looking across Goswell Road with the meaningless 'Pedestrians only' sign pointed out. |
The 'island' from the City Road side. That sign pointed out is shown right... But see below for 12-2-2005 update... |
Errr - actually, it's walkers on the right & bikes on the left! |
The sign at the other end of the 'island'. Does this mean cyclists can run walkers down??? |
|
From the St. John Street end... |
||
St. John Street has proper pedestrian-controlled lights in the correct position but put in by the previous Council. |
End of Owen Street. Clearly marked & correctly so but to get to the pedestrian control for the lights at the end, walkers have to cross the cycle lane twice. |
The problem high-lit on this slide has been fixed. Hurrah! But this page has been up for FOUR YEARS (since early 2004) & the other problems, all more serious, are still on-going. |
|
If you think the situation here is potty, try the next page, where we print the remarkable letter from the Council & show their plan for Colebrooke Row. We say - make two narrow cycle tracks at Colebrooke Row, separated by a road block in the middle. Then, move the pedestrian lights control on Goswell Road up to the natural crossing point opposite the path on the 'island'. |
Flowers for the last person to die at this crossing. Unless the Council pulls its finger out, there will be more deaths. |
Update 12-2-2005
This is all the Council is doing. The Council is too mean to even do the scheme on the next page. This extra island will not be adequate to stop rogue motorists trying to turn in here. |
