The A1 'consultation' - the Highbury Corner Working Party report

Highbury Corner has been cunningly designed for the maximum inconveniance & danger for all road users, vehicles, cycles & pedestrians, with various makeshift arrangements to try to mitigate this, none of which are really successful.

Right: Highbury Corner from the South-East on a quiet day. The car is on the South side of the roundabout which the team (see below) recommends should be closed.

There was a large degree of agreement about what needed to be done. Our team findings were:-

  • Road closures. Close Highbury Fields (into Holloway Road), Corsica Street & the South side of the roundabout, integrating that into Compton Terrace Gardens. The consequent traffic lights would make it safer for traffic & cyclists. At present, there are only pedestrian lights & the whole thing is hell for both pedestrians & traffic.
  • Integrate the public transport system at the Tube Station & the Bus Stops. (although outside the Council's powers, it would much improve the street scene if the Post office were removed & thae space in front of the station opened up).
  • Get rid of the redundant street furniture & all the 'safety' barriers & replace them with trees & seats.
  • Some members thought the A1 should be routed down Canonbury Road, rather than Upper Street.

The apparently loony idea of removing the safety barriers is a Dutch idea, where they have found it reduces accidents if all the road users can eyeball each other
