From: John Hilliger 2871 e-mail him

My Grandfather, Ernest Frederick Hilliger - born 12 July 1876/7 in Germany (place not known). He is said to have run away to sea when in his early teens and to have had a relative who lived in London who was a furrier. He married Annie Coates in 1899 in Hartlepool, Co. Durham (marriage certificate states that his father was also named Ernest, a draper, but was deceased).
He was interned in WW1 but was exempted from internment in WW2. We have a copy of the Tribunal Card but no place of birth is given. We can find no trace of naturalisation. He died in 1960 in Hartlepool. Any information or help would be appreciated.

Our ancestor is Andreas Heinrich August Moller and what we have is that he married in London in 1862 to a Mary Tomlinson ( born in Arksey, near Doncaster in 1832 ).
They had two children Johanna Elizabeth in 1863 and Albert William Andreas in 1865. We have the marriage certificate and the two childrens birth certificates. And Andreas death certificate.
However all we can find out about Andreas is on the 1871 Census it says born North Germany. We estimate about 1834. This is all the information we can find. Any help appreciated on this e-mail link.

I'm looking for information on the surname SIPPEL and SIPPLE. Daniel Sippel, son of German farmer George, arrived in the UK some time before 1890. He married into another German family, Notscheid, in 1891, settling in London. There appears to be a connection with Hull in West Yorkshire, but the bulk
of the history relates to Sippel (later Sipple) and Notscheid tailors in Walthamstow, London. Interested to hear from anyone with a Sipple, Sippel or Notscheid in their family tree, anyone that can help with searches for these names in Hull 1870-1890, and anyone with information on George or Daniel Sippel in Germany.

Any help appreciated.

From: Chris Haley e-mail her Schalk & Bartling

Johann Otto Schalk was my great-grandfather. He died in Mile End Old Town 1877. Age recorded as 49 so born 1828? Johann Otto married Johanne Gesina Bartling in Mile End Old Town 1859. Johanne died 1889 age 56, so born 1833?

Their children were:

Johann Otto b.1859
Johann Freidrich b. 1862
Anna Dorothea b.1865
Herman b.1868
Elise Adelheit b. 1874 (my paternal grandmother)
Anna Henrietta b. 1877

Baptismal records for the children (German church records) record Johann's occupation as sugarbaker and place of origin as variously - Furstenthum, Untermuster & Detmold, principality of Lippe. Johanne's place of origin is given variously as Wersebe, Blumenthal & Elsfeld? If anyone can share any information that could add to the above would be most grateful.

From: Marilyn Hamilton e-mail her Carl Dickmann

I'm trying to trace my great-grandparents who appear in the 1901 census at 7 Union street as bakers.
Apart from family legend, this (and my grandfather's baptism cert) are all I have to go on. As far as I know, Great-grandfather was Carl Dickmann (later anglicised to Charles Dickman). I know he was born in 1857, probably in Westfalen. He was in the Prussian Hussars, presumably stationed in Krefeld, which is where great-grandmother came from. They eloped when she was 18 and he was 30, in 1887 and my grandfather was born in London 17/6/1889.

My grandfather said that his family was related to Mayor Bernard F Dickmann of St Louis Missouri, but as yet I haven't found out exactly how.

I desperately want to find a birth and marriage certificate but so far have drawn blanks at the Family Record Centre and the Wills and Probate office. I thought that at the very least I would find letters of administration for the bakery, but no luck.

As I live in Alsace, and can see the Black Forest on a clear day, it's doubly frustrating. I would be so immensely grateful for any information or suggestions as to where I might begin to look next.
Thank you in advance for your help.

From: Liz Seville e-mail her Moritz Bauer from Wiesbaden

I am hoping for some help with trying to trace the routes of my grandfather, who left Germany about 1888 +/- a couple of years and went to the USA, became an American citizen and then married an English girl and lived most of his life in Manchester, but never become British. He came from Wiesbaden, but I do not know exactly where he was born or what year. His name was Moritz Bauer and came from Wiesbaden as far as I am aware - to us he was known as Maurice Bower, but appreciate his name had obviously been anglicised. I do not know from which German port he went to the USA or where he sailed to - all we have is hearsay. He eventually set up a prosperous cotton waste business in the UK, so we think he must have spent sometime in the cotton fields of the southern USA.

If any of the readers of Mitteilungsblatt are able to help me with how to find a date of birth in Germany, I would be most interested to hear from them. I have tried the Standesamt in Wiesbaden who say they can only help if I have an exact date of birth, which I do not have. My parents' generation spent a lifetime suppressing all information about him, which has made me and all my cousins more than a little curious about why!!

Anything of interest on this subject would be welcomed. Liz Seville

My family name is (von) Schleinitz and gradually over time changed to Perryman (taking the female surname and working with Race Horses). My (3rd grandfather used names such as William, Fredrick sometimes using Georges which was a family name. My eariest information on him is in Liverpool in 1870, later information is mainly in the Surrey area as a teacher of 'French' and 'German'. I am not sure where he is from documents just say Germany,or, Berlin but I have made possible links too to Brunswick. Can anyone help me further please?

I would like any info on Charles Siebert born 1829 Germany (posibly Wiesbaden) and his wife Elizabeth born 1835 also in Germany.
1st child was Charles Willaim Siebert, born 03/07/1861 in London.
He married a German wife, Johanna Keller and they raised their family in Battersea, one of which was my Grand Mother Mary Elizabeth Siebert born 1887.
Would really like to find out more of where they originated from and any family members to-day who are descended from Charles of 1829
