I am researching the family of RACHEL GONSIOROWSKA. Rachel was born circa 1846 in Gollanz in the Grand Duchy of Posen, then in Prussia but now part of Poland. Her father was Eleazer Gonsiorowski, a merchant. Rachel came to Britain about 1860 and lived for a while with her uncle GEORGE ASHER, a pawnbroker, in Sunderland before marrying ISRAEL (Isadore) COHEN, a jeweller, in 1864. Rachel and Israel later moved to Birmingham where they raised a large family. Two of Rachel’s sisters also came to Britain, Bertha born 1853 and Lena born 1859. They were born in Margonin, near to Gollanz.
Israel Cohen (born 1842) and his brother Myer (born 1850) also emigrated from Poland to Sunderland. Myer stayed in Sunderland and married Sarah from Dublin. The exact location of their birth is not known, I have two spellings Wiershon and Wieneszow/Wiendeszow. Their father was Emanuel Cohen. Any information, please email.

I am researching the family of AMALIE SCHRAMM born 1853/54 in Germany, a lady’s maid in Winchester in 1881, although she does not appear in the 1881 Census. She married Henry Parker, a private in the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade based at Winchester, in July of that year and soon after, their first child Isabella was born. The family moved to Northampton where Blanche Amalie, Anna and Martin Henry were born. Amalie Schramm’s father was Johan Martin Schramm, an armourer. It is not known whether Johan ever came to Britain. I would like to find where in Germany Amalie was born. Please contact me by email if you have any information.

I have been trying to find Margaret MERTENS for some time. What I know is: Margaret MERTENS was born c1848 in St George in the East, Middlesex, England. She married Thomas SMITH from Romford and they had 3 children Eliza (1867), Lettuce (1870) and John (1874). On her children's birth certificates her name was spelt 3 ways MERTENS/MEHRTENS/MERTHENS I have searched the births, marriages and deaths indexes and the census indexes and recorded every occurance of the surname in the right period of years. No luck with the birth of Margaret or her marriage to Thomas. What I have found and checked at Tower Hamlets Archives is a Margaret MERTENS registered at the St George's Lutheran Church school, Gt Alie Street in the autumn of 1853 when my Margaret would have been 5. Strangly her father is recorded as Ortgies BRUNJES of Whitechapel Road. I have also found that Ortgies BRUNJES married Amelia WAITE at St Leonards Shoreditch 27/5/1849 and that Amelia's sister Eliza WAITE married at the same church Albert MEHRTENS 18/7/1847. Could Albert be Margaret's father? What had happened to him by 1853? Why can't I find Margaret listed anywhere? There is a burial of a Margaret in St Paul's Hooper square 31/3/1846 and this could be her mother if my Margaret's age is wrong in the 1881 census (not unusual)? A lot of questions and if you know any of the answers I would be very pleased to hear from you. Regards Penny Parker

My name is Ted Washbrook and I live in Perth Western Australia, my membership number is : 2974

Jenny Towey sent me some information from the 1881 census on it there is shown a family HOLTY made up of

Father. Carle,
Mother. Anna,

4 children born Charlletsburg Germany,they are :
Elizabeth age 8
George 7
Carle 6 and ,
Otto 5.

On the cenus there are shown 2 children born Bow Middlesex UK,these are:
Hermann 3 and
Hetty 1.

I looked on the St.Catherines Files for the children born in the UK after confirming with the copy of the 1881 census held at our library, alas there were no listings under the name HOLTY but there was a Hermann Holtz, I called for a birth certificate and when it arrived it assured me that I was on the right track, Hermann was born at 224 Burdette Road Mile End Old Town Eastern. I got all excited then and went to see if I could Find Hetty,Holty or HOLTZ, again no joy but I found a Harriet Holtz about the right time so called for this certificate and when it arrived it showed the same address and although the names had been changed CharlesTheodore on Herman's to Karl Theodore on Harriet's and Johanna Sophia on Herman's to Annie Sophia on Harriet's certificate, I was fairly sure I was on the right course.
I haven't been any further yet but you can use any information you care to use.

I am seeking information on my grandfather Hermann PETERS who was interned in the Isle of Man in 1914. He was a baker in Douglas from about 1900. He does not appear on any of the indexes of internees but he was released in 1919 and returned to his family in Douglas Isle of Man. He went to Germany circa 1924 and reportedly died there.

I do not think that he was the Hermann Peters in the 1881 census on a ship in Rotherhithe. So far I have not found him in the 1891 census.

When I first joined the AGHFS  I was put in touch with another member in New Zealand, Hazel Petrie, who is descended from George Claassen.   But neither of us can find any proof of his existance prior to his entry  to the UK at Gravesend in September 1826.   I have been told, when holidaying in Germany, that Claassen is a name from the north of Germany.  I have searched church records in Holland too, lots of Claassens but no George.  A couple of years ago I found an interesting web site which I think was called the Oost-Friesland Society of Minnesota, again lots of Claassens but no George.

The surname is KERNER, the earliest date we have for John David Thomas in the UK is 1818. He was born about 1798, we don't know where. He was a Harp and Piano Maker by trade.
