The hotel did not do proper breakfasts, so we went back to the A1 (M) & had one in Ed’s Diner at the Services. We drove up the A1 &, after quite a jam before the Stamford By-pass bit, turned off on the A605 to Oakham, which I wanted to see but the road was up in the town centre & Melton Mowbray. We went on the Nottingham & off on the A52, picking up the A6 in Derby. The Holmsdale Cottage is still shut, so we had a snack lunch, coffee/tea & cake, in Cromford before climbing up onto the moors for the Arbor Low Stone Circle. We had to walk from the road up to the circle, a bit trying for Avis, especially as a strong wind was blowing, although it was sunny. The circle was surrounded by a bigger henge than usual & the stones, as expected had never been erected, as there were no post holes.

Ken went over to Gib Hill Barrow to take more photos & back to the henge, then dropped down & joined her.

The road to Buxton, we knew was closed, so carried on to Youlgrave, where we stopped for coffee (£4.60). One way & another, we got to Bamford & over the Snake Pass to Glossop, where we were made welcome by the Lovely Linda at ‘The Bird's Nest Cottage’ with tea & fruit cake. We went to Avis' sister Alyson's at about 18:15, when we went to Alysons. She took us for a short trip up the hill above Glossop to a pub but the car park was full, so we went to the Pizza Express in Glossop, tastefully done in an old textile mill. We all had some form of Italian mush & tiramisu & much chatting. Although she has some degenerative bone disease in her mouth, she is remarkably chipper. After, she ran us back in her new car, the freedom of which basically makes life worth living for her, although she is 16 years younger than Avis (& thus, 8 years younger than Ken).
