Alesund for Geiranger Fjord

We last visited Alesund in Winter on this link so take the link for many pictures of the Art Nouveau buildings in this very pretty town. I went out to find it overcast with spots of rain but it looked as if it might clear up. By & large, it did not.

Coming in towards Alesund

We went on the all-day coach trip to Geiranger Fjord, which involved a coach ride, a short ferry crossing (the coach went on all the ferries) & over the mountains. There were several photo stops.

One stop above the fjord showed the "Vision of the Seas" (a Royal Carribean troopship, seen in Honningsvag) near Geiranger village. This is a really deep-cut fjord.

We went down & up to another view point over the gorge, there being a very long waterfall above the village. Then, to the Hotel Union for a great buffet lunch. (In anticipation, I had limited my breakfast severely).

Leaving Geiranger

We walked around, looking at the waterfalls & then, took the ferry for an hour up the fjord, past the "Seven Sisters" waterfall with "The Suitor" waterfall opposite.

Remote farmstead, very rich once

This whole area is dramatic. Between Hellesylt, where the ferry dropped us & Stranda, where we took the last one, the country was much more farmer-friendly. Then, a coach trip back by a different route & one more ferry back to Alesund. The land (such as it was) varied quite a bit, with very marginal land in the deep fjords & better land in the valleys back, all due to different patterns of glaciation.
