St.Georges, Grenada

Friday 12th April 2013

Grenada today & up even earlier: 0600. The ship had to swing to the South, presumably to avoid rocks out from a peninsular but probably giving us our most Southerly point of the cruise.

Coming in to Grenada. St.Georges is round to the left (West side)

Grenada is very different from Barbados, very hilly, nay mountainous & St. Georges goes up from a bit of reclaimed land quite steeply.

St.Georges in the afternoon (when the Sun has come round a bit)

We were on a mini-bus of (I think) 18 pax, of which the Coast-to-Coast tour had several. The roads are quite vertiginous & this is not an island to hire a car. We were first taken to a seaside place for a pee break really but I got some photos.

Typical of many Caribbean beaches

Then, to St. Andrews for a spice factory, this being the basis of the local economy & rather old technology. Then, up to the top of the National Park for rum punch & views, including a crater lake in a rather small caldera: the Grand Etang.

On the way back to the ship, we stopped at a waterfall, where local idiots jump into the pond at the bottom from quite a height.

Rather better house

This tour needed more stops but the roads are rather narrow as well as steep. After lunch, I walked into St. Georges with an agenda of my own but a local attached himself to me unasked & followed me as a guide I did not need over by the fort to the older harbour, back through the tunnel, up to the Catholic Church for a view I needed, to the fish market & the terminal. I have No local currency nor dollars, because of the rush before we came away, so he was very disappointed.

Abatoir

There was a steel band at tea-time back on the ship, who left at 1615, the ship leaving at 5.

St.Georges at sail-away

This was followed by a proper sail-away party, as the ship left & cruised up the West Coast, all the way, it seemed. We saw a lot of dolphins.

West Coast of Grenada

Dinner with Robin Moss, one of the speakers, who we introduced to Glen Monie, our old crooner friend after. The Variety Show, which had one ace joke from the funny man: an American who said their potatoes were much bigger than ours got the repost that ours were smaller to fit in our mouths. Goes into my joke book!
