Funchal, Madiera

Saturday 30th December 2017

At sea at first, on our cloudy way to Madeira. We seemed to get into Funchal a bit early. Lunch at 12, as we were on tTour at 2, which was across the island to São Vincente after a stop for local firewater. There were large lava tunnels there, created by lava running through the pre-existing sediments and old lava and we walked through them for 700m. They were about 10-12 feet across, not as big as the Lanzarote huge ones but most are a couple of feet across. Where there were lights, some little plants had grown. The complex was, well, complex.

Sunday 31st December 2017 - New Year's Eve

An all-day = until 15:00 trip. We were coached to the gondelbahn (built by Doppelmeyer) & went up to Monte village. I walked up to the church, which is quite interesting, having a wooden painted ceiling. They are rather keen on having had Kaiser Karl here, the last Habsburg ruler.

Coffee & on to that fishing village Camara de Lobos, then to Cabo Girao for the view. Lunch was included at a nice hotel & then, back to the ship.

Funchal bay, prepared for the fireworks

We crashed out for about 85 minutes, then had a Captain’s Cocktail Party, unusually but it was for him to announce that we would leave Lisbon early at 12 on Wednesday because of storms heading in from the Atlantic. After the formal dinner, there was a mixed show. After, we changed out of our bling into somethings warmer & hung about on the top deck, which was fairly warm for the fireworks. These were quite different from last time but were co-ordinated right round the bay & as superior as usual.
